LEO IRAKLIOTIS

BIOGRAPHY

Leo(nidas) Irakliotis was born in Drama, Greece, in 1967.He studied physics at the University of Ioannina and in 1990 he came to the US to complete his studies. He earned an MS in theoretical physics from Miami University and a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Colorado State University. From 1997 until 1998, Mr. Irakliotis worked as a senior researcher at MCI Telecommunications and was a visiting professor at Illinois Institute of Technology.In 1998 he joined the Department of Computer Science at the University of Chicago where he is currently its associate chairman, and a founding fellow of the Computation Institute. He is also the managing partner of a technology and intellectual property consulting group. He is currently engaged in research projects with colleagues in Greece, Ireland, and Turkey in addition to collaborations with US collegues. “AN OCEAN APART: Challenges and rewards in re-connecting with Greece”

EU's emergence as a hot bed of scientific and research activity inspires an increasing number of expatriates to seek opportunities for collaborations with colleagues at their homeland and other EU nations. Numerous challenges impede the development of such collaborations. This presentation will address such challenges from an operational and optimistic point of view. It is certain that operational and procedural obstacles can be removed and the road for more effective, expeditious, and frequent collaboration can be paved.
