NATIONAL ISSUES

National issues are subjects involving public affairs, ethnicity, history, religion, heritage and culture, political events, international trends and economic developments that are of interest, collectively, to Hellenes around the world, to Hellas, Cyprus and the European Union. Even though the importance of National Issues (ethnika themata) varies over time, the priorities of World SAE now include:

Cyprus -- SAE advocates the just resolution of the conflict between Hellenic and Turkish residents of this island nation according to a model that provides for a bi-zonal, bi-communal united Cyprus, within the European Union, free of all occupation forces.

Pontian Genocide -- SAE's president has launched a worldwide campaign to secure support for the formal recognition of the Genocide of Pontian Hellenes by the Ottoman State and the Turkish army, especially during the first quarter of the 20th century when more than 353,000 Pontians were exterminated in Asia Minor.

Patriarch of Jerusalem -- In his efforts to achieve recognition of the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Ireneos, by the State of Israel, SAE's president has rallied ethnic support from Jewish organizations and governmental support in the U.S. as he seeks a break in the impasse.

Macedonia -- World SAE is in support of the work of the Pan-Macedonian Association of U.S. which seeks to preserve the Hellenic heritage and history of Macedonia.

Ecumenical Patriarchate -- SAE is a strong supporter of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and continues public awareness activities about the importance of the opening of the historic Theological School of Halki. Human and religious rights are among the basic issues advocated by the President of SAE.
